In addition to his job as art director in an advertising agency, Roman Tripler is a passionate photographer in his spare time. His camera has never left his side since he was a child. It is particularly important to him to present his surroundings undistorted and as unaffected by external influences as possible. Portraits and long-term reportages are therefore a focal point of his work. With his series “Kopfsache” [Engl. A matter for the head] he won the portrait competition of the international photo fair PhotoPlus Expo in New York in 2017. The impressive headstands can be seen at this year’s Photokina in Cologne from 25-30 September 2018. In our conversation he tells us how the idea for the portrait series “Kopfsache” came about.

Sihl editorial team:
How did you come up with the headstand idea?

Roman Tripler:
It wasn’t something I spontaneously thought of. The idea was also not an idea in the real sense of the word, but the result of an act of boredom by my son Luke, who took advantage of my looking for a motif during a walk to demonstrate a bit of sports on Cologne’s cathedral square. When I realised what he was doing, I turned to him, took a picture and was fascinated by the ease with which he seemed to do this headstand. The series actually only become a real idea when my son continued to do headstands in other places.

Sihl editorial team:
What do you want to express with the headstands and what role does the location play?

Roman Tripler:

Since his early childhood, Luke has relieved stress or boredom with movement and it was, and still is, completely irrelevant to him where he is. For him, movement equals happiness and a way to clear his head with his breakdance moves. That’s why I called this show “Kopfsache”. The locations where we do this are places that we have personal links to or are associated with memories. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a deep link. Luke usually finds these places, but often it just happens because we are in the right place at the right time. It’s basically a portrait of my son.

Sihl editorial team:
Why did you choose the Sihl Masterclass Baryta?

Roman Tripler:
It’s merely a coincidence that I came across this paper. During an exhibition in 2012, for which I organised everything myself for the first time, the paper I normally used wasn’t available and a colleague recommended the Sihl Masterclass Baryta for my black and white photographs, a paper that he himself also used. On the off chance, I ordered five boxes and the first test print immediately bowled me over. My image development, the printer and paper fit together perfectly. I love the analogue prints by the “old” black-and-white reportage photographers and the result came impressively close to that. The exhibition amazed many visitors because this combination of paper and development incorporates the charm of the good old days. The feel, colour and quality are simply perfect.
Aside from the fact that I love the consistency, feel and texture of the surface, the details and tonal values come across very well. In addition, the ink and paper are so perfectly matched to each other that the digital over sharpening is evened out and becomes a homogeneous sharpness. My friend and gallery owner, Thomas Zander, was really impressed with the prints. He said that they were of similar quality to those you see in a museum.

Sihl editorial team:
Do you already have a new project in the works?

Roman Tripler:
Yes, the Iceland bet. That’s all I want to tell you about it. Take a look at my website at http://www.romantripler.com/die-story

Sihl editorial team:
Thank you for your time. We’re already looking forward to the many exciting projects that we’ll realise together.

Roman Tripler:
Thank you for the great cooperation. I’m looking forward to the next project with Sihl.
